The 4th running of The O'Darby Stakes, seen as a forerunner to the Irish Derby, was held on Wednesday 14th June 1820 at The Curragh over 1 mile 3 furlongs and 58 yards. Ten Subscribers paid 25 sovereigns each, with colts allocated 8st 7lbs and fillies allocated 8st 2lbs. The winner was owned by Lord Cremorne.

On Monday 24th April 1820 Penruddock was second in a 10 Guineas a side Sweepstake behind Spriggins. On Saturday 29th April 1820 Rover won the Belmore Stakes (50 Guineas) beating Mr Prendergast's bay colt by Sir Henry Dinsdale. On Monday 1st May 1820 Ohio won a 100 Guineas Sweepstake from Louise and The Ogress. On the same card Rover won the 200 Guineas Talbot Plate from The Turk and Kitten. Also on the same card Ohio was second in the Madrid Stakes of 30 Guineas a side behind the bay colt by Sir Henry Dinsdale. On Wednesday 14th June 1820, just before winning the O'Darby Stakes, Rover won a 25 Guineas Sweepstake from Montemar.
